Fall is finally here and it is time to get your home in shape for the cooler months ahead! Autumn is one of the busiest months for homeowners because it is time for them to get the exterior and interior of their home straightened out before the first snowfall. Here are some of our top tips for getting your home in shape this fall:

In order to prepare for the winter months, you’ll want to make sure that you have proper insulation to save on heating costs this winter. It will also be a good idea to check for any places that you feel a draft of cold air. If you do, apply weather stripping and caulk around areas of your windows and doors to ensure that heat stays in your home, while the cold is kept out.

If your windows and doors are somewhat older, you may want to consider replacing them with newer energy efficient windows and doors. Proper sealing and insulation can save up to 20% on heating and cooling cost or up to 10% on your total annual bill.

The change of seasons is also a good time to check your smoke detectors and all of your carbon monoxide detectors, as these can usually go overlooked.

One of that most important things you can do is to inspect exterior walls to see if any paint is peeling or blistering on the house. This is a sign that that the paint can no longer protect the siding of the building, and left uncorrected the siding itself will deteriorate, leading to expensive repairs in the future. Another important thing that you will want to do is to clean out your gutters this fall. When neglected, clogged gutters can cause serious and costly repairs. Remove any and all debris from your gutters in order to prevent foundation and structural damages to your home.
